English Teachers' Day - Afternoon Session: The Power of the Image

Kontext / Contexte
Students are bombarded with images in their lives, including in English language coursebooks. But beyond making a coursebook look great, what pedagogical purpose do they serve? In this hands-on workshop, I’ll start by exploring why exactly images are such a powerful teaching tool in the English language classroom. I’ll then present and give participants the opportunity to try out a range of a different activities based around images that you can use in your classes to drive not only communication but critical and creative thinking too.

Knowledge
the participants will learn:
- the theory of why images are such a powerful teaching tool.
- how images can help develop key 21st century skills.
- a range of activities to use in the classroom to drive interaction and engagement.
- where to look for great images to use in class.
Know-how
the participants will be capable of:
- planning and delivering engaging activities using images to drive communication, critical and creative thinking
- utilising images in a way which enhances student learning and bringing the world to the classroom and the classroom to life.
Posture
the participants will:
- understand how using image-based activities can have a positive impact in the classroom in terms of engagement, motivation, and inclusivity
- having a positive understanding of how using images can develop students 21st century skills.
