Study visit ESHA (European School Heads Association) - school leaders making a difference
(Code : A-e-46)
Kontext / Contexte
As school leaders we face many challenges. We can learn from each other how to address these challenges in a better way and work together to develop a strategy that enables us to make a real difference in our schools and educational systems.
The biennial ESHA conferences are an excellent opportunity for learning, sharing experiences, collegial support, mutual networking and building new professional collaborations, partnerships and friendships. This is also the goal of our biennial ESHA Conference, Dubrovnik 2023, which, in addition to special lectures and workshops, offers all participants a visit to educational institutions in the city of Dubrovnik and a conversation with the heads of kindergartens, elementary schools, high schools, vocational schools, art schools, and student residences with the opportunity to learn about the cultural and natural heritage of the Dubrovnik region.
All of us who work in this demanding profession know how vital the role of the school principal is and that the leadership of a school has a decisive impact on the motivation of the staff, the school climate, and indirectly on the success of the students. We face many challenges in this work. The biennial conference is an opportunity for us to learn from each other about how we can better address these challenges and work together to develop a strategy that enables school leaders to make a real difference in their schools and educational systems.

Inhalt / Contenu
Many countries have given schools more autonomy while holding them more accountable for results. Schools are under pressure to improve overall student performance while serving more diverse
student populations and to use more evidence-based teaching practices.
As a result of these trends, the function of school leadership across OECD countries is now increasingly defined by a demanding set of roles which include financial and human resource management and leadership for learning. But there are concerns across countries that the role of principal as conceived for needs of the past is no longer appropriate.
In many countries, principals have heavy workloads; many are reaching retirement, and it is getting harder to replace them. Potential candidates often hesitate to apply, because of overburdened roles, insufficient preparation and training, limited career prospects and inadequate support and rewards. These developments have made school leadership a priority in education systems across the world.
