Online: Gender4Stem in Action – training for teachers, hands-on practice for Gender Fair Teaching

Kontext / Contexte
Following the success of the Erasmus+ project Gender4Stem, WIDE (Women in Digital Empowerment) has decided to pursue its efforts towards gender fairness in teaching, with the support of the FNR (Luxembourg National Research Fund) and in partnership with the LIST (Luxembourg Institute of Science & Technology).
Zielsetzung / Objectifs
Knowledge
The participants will learn the objectives, structure and teaching materials of the Gender4STEM Teaching Assistant Platform.
Know-how
The participants will be able to:
- compare and contrast teachers' behaviour concerning gender stereotypes and biases in STEM education
- demonstrate a change in approaching gender stereotypes and biases in STEM education
- apply the teaching materials recommended by the Gender4STEM Teaching Assistant to raise girls' interest in STEM.
Posture
The participants will:
- find out the level of gender-fairness of their teaching
- elaborate a change in approaching gender stereotypes and biases in STEM education
- step up their gender-fairness to improve their teaching.
Inhalt / Contenu
Session 1 (3.5 hours):
- introducing the GTA Platform
- gender-fair practice: where do you stand? Use the self-assessment tool, find out how gender-fair your teaching is and access personalised recommendations of teaching materials to improve your practices
- a campaign with and for GTA using Project Based Learning. Plan and discuss how you can deploy recommended gender-fair teaching practices in your classroom
- feedback dialogue and conclusion of the session.
The training will be accompanied by an individualised follow-up with the objective of promoting the creation of a network and the implementation of concrete actions.
Session 2 (3 hours):
- introducing the session
- presenting and discussing teachers' campaigns implementations
- finding out other relevant materials on the GTA
- gender-fair practice: where do you stand after using the GTA? Re-answering the Gender4STEM questionnaire
- feedback dialogue and conclusion of the session.
Arbeitsformen / Approche méthodologique
The training will combine theoretical contributions and hands-on activities mainly based on the use of the digital platform Gender4STEM Teaching Assistant (GTA). The training is designed based on a Project-Based-Learning approach.
Why Project Based Learning, complemented with blended learning? Because we want to introduce the Gender4STEM Teaching Assistant (GTA) to the teachers. Blended learning generally refers to incorporating online learning into training to create hybrid learning experiences for learners. It could be an effective method to achieve better trainers' engagement, by transferring the focus on the learner, thus creating learner-centered activities, where core 21st century skills, like communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity are addressed.
Gender4STEM Teacher Assistant Campaign. We will use a GTA Campaign as the topic of the training. Trainees will develop it during the two sessions of the training programme.
Detailed procedures. The use of the GTA platform will allow the trainees to find out methods and teaching materials ready to be used in class with their students. By first experiencing both the contents and the methodology appropriate to develop gender-fair teaching on the GTA Platform, they will strengthen their understanding and practice.
